Augusta Artisans on Film

May 4, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Mark Albertin is a lover of film photography. Unlike sports photographers, which uses fast shutter speeds, Albertin likes to take his time in getting to know the subject, often taking hours per session. With there being no LCD screen to instantly show his progress, he waits to be surprised in the dark room. The magic that happens under the red safelights as he agitates his photographs in their trays captivate him. Eventually the process reveals the image he had labored over with a confirmation that the shoot was done correctly.

In creating this series, “Augusta Artisans on Film,” Albertin’s goal was to capture a few of the many craftspeople who make up the Central Savannah River Region. Not digitally, but on film. Which proved a great challenge because he wanted to photograph them performing their craft, in their studios, utilizing a craft that is now rarely seen in photography anymore – prints produced from negatives on fiber photo paper. In all, Mark Albertin photographed a husband-and-wife luthier team, a jewelry artist, a metalsmith bike frame maker, a potter, a paper card artist, a charcoal/watercolor artist, a brewer, and finally a chocolatier. Which totals over 15 images in large format prints.

The Greater Augusta Arts Council is excited to showcase this series starting March 3rd through May 4, 2022, Monday – Friday from 9 – 5:00 PM at the City Gallery, which is located on the ground level of the Municipal Building at 535 Telfair St. in downtown Augusta, GA.

An artist’s closing reception will be held May 7th at Riverwatch Brewery from 5-7:00 PM. Food and drink will be made available for purchase through Riverwatch Brewery and a TBD Food Truck.

Both the showcase and closing reception are open to the public at no cost.

The artworks on display are not for sale, but prints may be made available upon request and can be purchased through contacting the Greater Augusta Arts Council for the duration of the exhibition. Please visit our website, www.augustaarts.com , for more information.
