Free Summer Film Series: RENT (The Movie)

Based on Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’, ‘Rent’ tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life in modern day East Village, New York City, 1989-1990. Among the group are our narrator, nerdy love-struck filmmaker Mark Cohen; the object of Mark’s affection, his former girlfriend, Maureen Johnson; Maureen’s Harvard-educated public interest lawyer and lesbian lover Joanne Jefferson; Mark’s roommate, HIV-positive musician and former junkie, Roger Davis; Roger’s new girlfriend, the HIV-positive drug addicted S&M dancer, Mimi Marquez; their former roommate, HIV-positive computer genius Tom Collins; Collins’ HIV-positive drag queen street musician/lover Angel; and Benjamin Coffin III, a former member of the group who married for money and has since become their landlord and the opposite of everything they stand for. Shows how much changes or doesn’t change in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year.

60th & Final Reunion Concert Johnny Hensley and the Red Hots

Johnny Hensley and the Red Hots Present their Final Reunion Concert on Saturday July 28th at 8Pm. 60 years of Rock N’ Roll by Augusta’s first Rock n’ Roll Band. This is predicted to be another SOLD OUT event just like the past 5. All your favorite 50’s and 60’s rock n’ roll music starring George Croft, Sid Hatfield, Tillman Ezernack, Frank Mears, Johnny Hensley, a full brass section full violin section, additional overhead video, lighting and of course, classy wardrobe. The Concert will be taped for future television broadcast. All profits go to Natalie’s light to raise awareness of teen suicide in the Augusta Area.

Vintage old cars and shaggers, from the CSRA Shag Club, will be on the street prior to the concert. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you this is one of the most fun nights in Augusta with non-stop Rock n’ Roll.  There will be and after party after the show.

Free Summer Film Series: Big Hero 6

Big Hero 6 is a 2014 American 3D computer-animated superhero film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Loosely based on the superhero team of the same name by Marvel Comics, the film is the 54th Disney animated feature film. Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the film tells the story of Hiro Hamada, a young robotics prodigy who forms a superhero team to combat a masked villain. The film features the voices of Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Daniel Henney, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans, Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, Alan Tudyk, James Cromwell, and Maya Rudolph.

Rated PG for action and peril, some rude humor, and thematic elements.

Free Summer Film Series: Dreamgirls ( The Movie)

Detroit, the early 1960s. Curtis Taylor, Jr., a car salesman, breaks into the music business with big dreams. He signs a trio of young women, the Dreamettes, gets them a job backing an R&B performer, James “Thunder” Early, establishes his own record label and starts wheeling and dealing. When Early flames out, Curtis makes the Dreamettes into headliners as the Dreams, but not before demoting their hefty big-voiced lead singer, Effie White, and putting the softer-voiced looker, Deena Jones, in front. Soon after, he fires Effie, sends her into a life of proud poverty, and takes Deena and the Dreams to the top. How long can Curtis stay there, and will Effie ever get her due?

The film adaptation of Dreamgirls stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson, and also features Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson.
