Hannah Ehrlich’s work uses traditional modes of weaving, crocheting and fabric manipulation that function in non-traditional ways as both objects and two-dimensional surfaces. Texture, color, form, and depth come together to create dense overlapping striations and overflowing piles of fabric that reference the evolving and enveloping landscape. Through these final wall-bound sedimentary sculptures, nature is seen as perpetually powerful, turbulent, and dangerous. Posed within us is a question of order or chaos? Known or unknown? The illusion of space on the surface allows for these questions to intertwine with one another. The relationship between movement and space and the body’s awareness in this particular environment can lead to an exploration and transportation of thought. The mysterious forms that perhaps first come across as unnerving may simply be resting there waiting for the viewer to complete them.
