This year marks the fifth anniversary of the event, now a staple Masters Week in Augusta. Confirmed to headline is Grammy Award winning performer, writer, producer and cultural icon George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic.
Inspired by Motown‘s assembly line of sound, George Clinton gradually put together a collective of over 50 musicians and recorded the ensemble during the ’70s both as Parliament and Funkadelic. While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a Funk free-for-all, blending influences from the Godfathers (James Brown and Sly Stone) with freaky costumes and themes inspired by ’60s culture and science fiction. Parliament-Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
The early ’90s saw the rise of funk-inspired rap (courtesy of Digital Underground, Dr Dre, and Warren G) and Funk Rock (Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers) that re-established the status of Clinton & co. as one of the most important forces in the recent history of music. Clinton’s music became the soundtrack for the rap movement, as artists from MC Hammer to LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg depended heavily on the infectious groove of Clinton’s productions as the foundation of their recordings.
Before George Clinton lands the mothership at the Augusta Common, the world-renowned James Brown Band is slated for a rare reuniting as direct support. Over the course of his 50 year recording and performing career, Mr. Brown literally changed the direction of popular music by forging his own path and constantly shattering previously held notions of what was acceptable. In so doing, he created a completely new sound and genre of music called Funk. He also garnered a reputation for having the tightest, most disciplined band in show business. There are many James Brown tribute acts and imitators, but this is the Real James Brown Band.
The Major Rager will honor the musical legacy of James Brown whose memorial statue on Broad St. overlooks the festival grounds. The show will benefit the talented youngsters from the James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils (JAMP). This wonderful nonprofit organization is headed by Mr. Brown’s daughter Deanna Brown Thomas, and furthers music education for Augusta’s youth. A portion of proceeds from the event will go to JAMP, who will also perform their music to the delight of both visitors and the hometown crowd alike.
Performing as Artist at Large is fourteen-year-old guitarist Brandon “Taz” Niederauer, living proof that dreams really do come true. It started when Brandon watched the movie School of Rock at eight-years-old. Inspired by his father’s record collection, he instantly realized he wanted to play guitar. Four years later, he was cast as the principle role of guitarist “Zack Mooneyham” in the Tony Award nominated Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway production, School of Rock the Musical.
