Mary S. Byrd Gallery of Art announces Forever Yesterday by Johannes Barfield, September 17 – October 16. 2020. The exhibition features paintings, video, sound, and sculpture. Johannes’s conceptual underpinning for this exhibition revolves around the cyclical nature of being caught in what may seem like an endless loop.

Forever Yesterday, designed for installation at the Mary S. Byrd Gallery, includes works inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book (1936-1966)- a travel guide book that was designed to assist African-American travelers during the Jim Crow era, and Objective Reasonableness, a term coined in 1989 during a Supreme court case that investigated the use of excessive force by police officers on citizens.

About Johannes Barfield
Johannes Barfield is a multi-media artist from Winston-Salem, NC, who works in photography, video, sculpture, and sound installations.
Johannes work revolves around the black American experience and how institutions and systems of power and influence connect to the amplification and nullification of blackness. His work examines urban and rural environments as a space for creative exchange, childhood memories, acts of violence provoked by poverty, internet age lynchings by police who receive immunity, the open road, car culture, and the music played at family cookouts.

Johannes received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Photography + Film and a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in New Media +Design. His accolades include several awards, fellowships, and residencies including the Mint Museum Atrium Health best in show award, the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship that awards programs and people who show exceptional promise in the arts, The Merriweather District AIR residency in Columbia, MD; The Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship in Provincetown, MA; The Lighthouse Works Fellowship in Fishers Island, NY; the ACRE Residency in Steuben, WI; and the MASS MoCA Residency in North Adams, MA.
