About Alex Foltz:
As an artist I have rarely been one to gravitate towards fantastical imagery, or abstraction to tell the story I intend to tell. Although I may occasionally pull from imagination, I’m drawn towards the life I see around me: I believe that it’s more wonderful, magical, complicated, and bizarre than any singular Idea or concept could communicate. The story it tells is one that we all share, one that we all question, and one that we are all invested in, for better or for worse. Experience can tell it, words can tell it, but I hope to tell it in my own way: with a brush.
While I have dabbled in other art forms, oil paint is certainly my passion. I quickly fell in love with the freedom, versatility, and liveliness it brings to my work. With oils, I can communicate a mood or tone not only in the subject matter, but in the brushwork. I place each brush stroke intentionally, keeping it visible and clear. I want the viewer to be able to dissect each painting: first seeing something familiar, and then seeing how it
was constructed. I also try to make my paintings feel closer to life by leaving certain details open to interpretation with loose, suggestive brushwork, while tightening and refining the central focus for the narrative at hand. I want to solidify and root what’s
important, and let the viewers brain fill in the rest, similarly to how we perceive the world around us in life.
My paintings showcase a variety of subject matter, including figurative work, landscapes, and still-lifes. My intention is never to paint a place, or a thing, but to capture the mood, and tone. To paint a narrative in moments, a small slice of a greater
whole. Each piece is intended to evoke a feeling, or allude to an idea. The goal is rarely to drive a specific point, but to represent something more subtle, and familiar. I hope that each person that views my paintings will connect with them in their own way, and put themselves into the piece however they may fit. While each painting carries its own simple story, my artistic focus is not on any singular piece, but the entire body of work.
My goal is to use my paintings to weave a broad story about life, growth, love, despair, and what it means to be human.
