The Paine College Department of Humanities will celebrate the 22nd Evelyn G. Etheridge Conference on the Harlem Renaissance on October 30 – November 1, 2019 at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. The Conference, founded in 1997 by Dr. Lola M. Richardson, former chair of the Department and Paine alumna, will examine the national and international impact of the Harlem Renaissance that spanned from 1919 to 1940.

This year’s theme, “The Black Male Agenda: Art, Politics, and the Future Image of Race” invites professors, undergraduate, graduate students, and independent scholars to analyze the Renaissance’s debates about race and racism, the role of art and politics, and the representation of the modern Black American. The Conference’s keynote speaker will be Dr. David C. Driskell, Internationally Renowned Artist and Scholar and Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park which houses The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. Dr. Driskell will deliver the keynote address on October 30th at 11:00 am in the Gilbert – Lambuth Memorial Chapel and will host a town hall meeting to address the role of art in politics and race on October 31st from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. An exhibition of Dr. Driskell’s works will be featured at the Morris Museum of Art October 10, 2019-January 16, 2020 where Mr. Kevin Grogan is director and curator.

Pre- Conference Events will also be held on October 28th and 29th at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History and the Jessye Norman School of the Arts.
