Flyer of Event

Friday, February 2nd || 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. || The City Gallery

This exhibition displays annually The Mayoral Collection of Black History. Gallery Director Heather Dunaway decided to, last year, extend and expand upon this annual showcase and feature current arts happenings that pay tribute to Augusta’s culture and history, created by local artists and organizations. Last year saw the Golden Blocks Legends comic books. This year will feature Westobou’s 2022 Artist in Residence, Devin Lovett with select works from his solo exhibition, Immaculate.

Devin’s recent works center around identity. He portrays the black American identity in its infancy by emphasizing the skin tones and leaving the clothing negative to reflect the stripping away of the original African based identity leaving the figure with only its vibrant hue. The figures are also blinded to drive home the sense of uncertainty for this new culture’s future in the same way African slaves were constantly uncertain of their own survival in this new foreign land.
