The Abecedary Project – Caroline Garrett Hardy

July 21, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Free

Friday, June 23rd – Friday, August 4th || 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. || Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art

The Abecedary Project consists of handmade paper kimonos emphasizing a variety of design processes, with interpretations of words illustrating each letter of the alphabet. The kimonos have visually complex surfaces and use symbols, icons, and words to create narrative fragments. Hardy Garrett’s kimono-art is created in a collage-style with rubbings on rice papers and upcycled materials, digital imagery, and various paper-craft techniques. The complex surfaces become story-bytes which reflect attitudes about human nature. “I am motivated by Asian, indigenous, and Western aesthetics, the diversity of cultural perspectives, and by beauty.  A love of typography, design, history, religion, as well as a passion for paper motivates my work.”

Opening Reception || June 23rd || 5 – 7 p.m. || Free
