Reckoning with Our Past, gallery opening presented by Augusta Mini Theatre
May 11, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
FreeThe Augusta Mini Theatre announces the soft opening of the exhibit, ‘Reckoning with our Past”. The collection combines research and personal testimonies to tell the story of the 1970 Augusta Riot from the perspective of the community and from the vantage point of thorough revisiting of evidence.
Included in the exhibit are historic photos, biographies of eyewitnesses and victims’ families, and original art created from oral history interviews.
Originally displayed on location at the City Gallery, on the first floor of the Augusta- Richmond County Municipal Building, where the event spontaneously erupted 52 years ago and where a new official historic marker now stands, the exhibit is now on display at the Augusta Mini Theatre.
The purpose of the exhibit is to accurately preserve the important history of the largest Black uprising to occur in the Deep South region during the Civil Rights Era. It will serve to provide a space for remembrance and education for generations to come.
The soft opening will take place on the anniversary date of the uprising, on May 11th from 10am-12pm. Group tours available, must be scheduled by appointment.
