March 25th – May 6th || 10 – 11 a.m. || Jessye Norman School of Arts

In this course students will learn the basics of creative writing in three disciplines. They will learn to read closer; with an eye toward craft, and form, and will workshop each other’s pieces as an artistic community. Students will use the tools they learn in class to create a polished, final draft of a piece of creative writing in just six weeks.

After taking this class you will:

 Develop a literary vocabulary || Learn to read closely. That is, to read for secondary and tertiary meanings of a text, as well as decipher elements of craft and their authorial intention or purpose || Learn workshop skills that will help you foster your own artistic community with your peers || Learn the difficult practice of revision. The best writing is always rewriting. It is the hardest part of the process, and the one that takes the most from the writer. You will tackle it together along with the rest of your classmates, each having a turn both to give advice, and hear advice on their own pieces. || Gain a greater appreciation for the written word as an art form || Practice basic public speaking (you will choose a section of your piece to read on workshop day)
