Come visit the Morris Museums to view the recently acquired stoneware storage jar by David Drake. David Drake (ca. 1800–1870s) was a poet and master potter who was born into slavery on a South Carolina plantation owned by the Drake family. Dave remains one of the most prolific and talented American potters of the 19th century. His work is housed in numerous museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others.

Artrageous! Family Sunday: Celebrate David Drake February 5 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Come learn about the amazing life of this enslaved potter in South Carolina. He learned to read and write even though it was illegal and inscribed his pots with poetry and rhymes. Make and inscribe your own air-dry vase, then listen to the story of Dave the Potter.
