Canal to Cloth – A Day at the Mill

Dates Vary || 3 – 5 p.m. || Augusta Canal Discovery Center

You’re late to orientation for your first day as a millworker at Enterprise Mill! You’ll play a role as a new hire and be put to work to run the loom that creates the cloth manufactured in this 1800’s era manufacturing mill. As a new hire, you’ll need to understand the business from the time the cotton arrives on the Petersburg boat to the time it hits the machines. As a “trainee,” you’ll earn $2 a week for your six-day work week and be paid in company scrip to spend at the company store. You’ll also learn how to work alongside 10-year-old child workers and how they were handpicked from the school to get a job. In this one of a kind experience, Canal to Cloth, a Day at the Mill you’ll see how the Augusta Canal still generates power for Augusta today and plays a crucial role in the community of Augusta’s River Region.
