I explore the sense of self to gain a deeper understanding of the human experience. By manipulating photography into various media, I am able to explore the images in different aspects. How we see ourselves and how others see us is constantly in flux. We see ourselves as one whole, sentient being, but we are intimately connected to and influenced by the world around us in ways we are not immediately aware of.
I take digital photographs to begin my process. I print out the photographs and transfer them onto drawing paper with acetone rubbing. I intentionally leave out pieces of the portrait so that I can draw them in. For my work in the darkroom, I print the digital photographs onto transparent paper and use those as negatives for double exposures, painting and splashing on developer to reveal the image. While each image is based on a photograph, each one is uniquely distorted. Each of these processes of manipulation changes the image, just as our sense of self changes from day to day, moment to moment, and person to person.
